Mingyan Liu receives CoE Monroe-Brown Foundation Service Excellence Award

Prof. Mingyan Liu received the 2016-2017 Monroe-Brown Foundation Service Excellence Award from the College of Engineering for her significant and impactful service contributions in the academic and professional community, particularly in the recruitment and retention of female students and faculty.

As Associate Chair of Graduate Affairs for Electrical and Computer Engineering, Prof. Liu helped implement a diversity incentive program that led to a record number of newly-admitted underrepresented PhD students in 2016. At the same time, she oversaw the merger of two graduate programs, a major structural change that went smoothly thanks in large part to her leadership.

She regularly contributes to special programs sponsored by students groups, professional societies, and companies aimed at recruiting young women to STEM fields, while working with undergraduate female students on research projects.

On the College level, she helped institute new procedures in the recruitment of female faculty as a member and chair of the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Female Faculty, and she chaired the planning committee for the highly successful Leadership Retreat for Women in 2015.

On the University level, Prof. Liu served on the Provost’s Faculty Advisory Committee, the ADVANCE Launch Committees, the Michigan Sustainable Transportation Imperative steering committee, the UM-SJTU Joint Faculty search committee, and the CoE International Programs Committee.

She also maintains a full slate of professional research-related service activities. In recent years, she has served as technical program chair or co-chair for the IEEE Int. Conf. on Mobile Ad hoc and Sensor Systems (MASS), the IEEE Int. Conf. on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS), and the IEEE Inf. Conf. on Computer Communications (INFOCOM). She was Assoc. Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks.

In the area of education, her colleagues have greatly appreciated her service in the education of our undergraduate students by taking on a popular major design experience course and the challenge of learning this new course, even though it was out of her area of expertise. Her contributions to the course have been highly successful.

Prof. Liu conducts research in the area of communication networks, especially wireless, mobile, ad hoc, and sensor networks. Her most recent research activities involve online learning, modeling and mining of large scale Internet measurement data concerning cyber security, and incentive mechanisms for inter-dependent security games.

She co-founded QuadMetrics in 2014 to commercialize technology on predictive data analytics for quantitative cyber security assessment. The company was acquired by the analytics software firm FICO in 2016. That same year, she received a PI Excellence Award from the Department of Homeland Security, Cyber Security Division.

Prof. Liu received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Nanjing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics in China, and a master’s and doctoral degree in systems engineering and electrical & computer engineering, respectively, from the University of Maryland. She joined the University of Michigan Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2000. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.
