Honglak Lee featured on “AI’s 10 to Watch” list

Prof. Honglak Lee has been named to the prestigious list of AI’s 10 to Watch, an acknowledgement of rising star researchers in artificial intelligence (AI) that is published every other year by IEEE Intelligent Systems.

Prof. Lee was selected for this recognition based on his research contributions in the area of machine learning. His research interests span representation learning, unsupervised and semi-supervised learning, transfer learning, graphical models, optimization, and large-scale learning. His research on unsupervised feature learning and deep learning algorithms has direct potential impacts in real-world industrial applications, such as image search, voice search, and multimedia search. He is also interested in application of his techniques to computer vision, audio recognition, data mining, robotics, and healthcare.

Prof. Lee received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2010 and joined the department that year. He received best paper awards at ICML 2009 and CEAS 2005, and is a recent recipient of a Google Faculty Research Award. Lee has served as an area chair for ICML 2013 and as a guest editor of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence special issue on learning deep architectures.

Prof. Lee has taught courses in Unsupervised Feature Learning (EECS 598), Machine Learning (EECS 545), and Discrete Mathematics (EECS 203). He is affiliated with the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the Computer Science and Engineering Division of the EECS Department.
