Students voted, and named Professor Fawwaz Ulaby the 2017-2018 HKN Professor of the Year in ECE by the Beta-Epsilon chapter of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the national honor society for electrical and computer engineers. This is the third time Ulaby has received this honor.

The Professor of the Year Award is awarded based on popular vote by all undergraduate and graduate students in programs administered by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Ulaby, who is the Emmett Leith Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was teaching one of his last classes of the year when he was surprised with the award right before teaching EECS 215: Introduction to Electronic Circuits. This is a rather challenging introductory course in electrical and computer engineering, and a course where it can be diffcult to gain the following of students. But Ulaby is no ordinary teacher.

Several came to join in the celebration, including students instructors, staff, and faculty.

A recipient of the IEEE James H. Mulligan Education Award and the HKN C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Teaching Award, Ulaby’s dedication to the education of students is legendary at Michigan. In addition to his classroom teaching, he has published 16 books, including the highly successful Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics, and is on a mission to offer new textbooks to students for free on-line, and at cost in hard cover.

Ulaby’s excellence as an educator is matched only by his excellence as a researcher. A member of the National Academy Engineering, and a fellow of IEEE and AAAS, Ulaby has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career from the professional community, including the IEEE Edison Medal.
