On a Boundary Integral Equation Approach Modeling the Interaction of Light with Nanostructured Metallic Objects

Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) is the technology modeling the interaction of electromagnetic waves (EM waves) with physical objects and their surroundings. This technology has been demonstrated to be a key element in the design of, e.g., modern antennas, waveguiding/shaping devices, etc..It has been playing a pivotal role in forging modern communication systems, and therefore was, is and will be greatly impacting peoples' daily life. However, despite of all these successes, very recent experiments on the interaction of light (EM waves at optical frequencies) with deep-nanoscale metallic structures suggest the need of a paradigm shift in the classic CEM algorithms, where a more refined material model is required. As the very first step in this direction, we combine the dynamics of classical EM waves with the semi-classical hydrodynamic motion of free electrons in metals. The problem is formulated in the framework of Boundary Integral Equations (BIEs) and subsequently solved by the Method of Moments (MoM) algorithm. This research contributes to potentially bridging the computational gap between the classical macroscopic world and the quantum mechanical microscopic world, and provides an essential tool for chemists and physicists to understand new physics in the nanoscopic world.
Guy A. E. Vandenbosch was born in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, on May 4, 1962. He received the
M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leuven,
Belgium, in 1985 and 1991, respectively.
He was a research and teaching assistant from 1985 to 1991 with the Telecommunications and
Microwaves section of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, where he worked on the modeling of
microstrip antennas with the integral equation technique. From 1991 to 1993, he held a postdoctoral
research position at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Since 1993, he has been a Lecturer, and since 2005, a Full Professor at the same university. Guy Vandenbosch has taught or teaches courses on "Electromagnetic Waves", "Antennas", "Electromagnetic Compatibility", "Fundamentals of
Communication and Information Theory", "Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Electrical Energy",
and "Digital Steer- and Measuring Techniques in Physics".
Guy Vandenbosch is holder of a certificate of the postacademic course in Electro-Magnetic
Compatibility at the Technical University Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
His research interests are in the area of electromagnetic theory, computational electromagnetics, planar antennas and circuits, nano-electromagnetics, EM radiation, EMC, and bio-electromagnetics. His work has been published in ca. 300 papers in international journals and has led to ca. 370 papers at international conferences. His work on computational electromagnetics and antennas has resulted in 8 book chapters on this topic. His work on antenna design has led to 7 patents in this field. Mr. Vandenbosch has convened and chaired numerous sessions at many conferences. He was co-chair and vice-chair of the European Microwave Week in Amsterdam in 2004 and 2012, respectively. In 2004, he chaired the TPC of the European Microwave Conference within this Week. He was a member of the TPC of the European Microwave Conference in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He was one of the vice
chairs within the team organizing the EuCAP conference 2014 in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Guy Vandenbosch was a member of the "Management Committees' of the consecutive European
COST actions on antennas between 1993 and 2017, where he was leading the working group on
modeling and software for antennas. Within the ACE Network of Excellence of the EU (2004-2007),
he was a member of the Executive Board and coordinated the activity on the creation of a European
antenna software platform. After ACE, he started to lead the EuRAAP Working Group on Software
and to represent this group within the EuRAAP Delegate Assembly (2007-2018).
From 2001 to 2007, he was the President of SITEL, the Belgian Society of Engineers in
Telecommunication and Electronics. From 2008 to 2014, he was a member of the board of FITCE
Belgium, the Belgian branch of the Federation of Telecommunications Engineers of the European
In the period 1999-2004, he was vice-chairman, in the period 2005-2009 secretary, and in the period
2010-2016 chairman of the IEEE Benelux Chapter on Antennas en Propagation. In the period 2002-
2004 he was secretary of the IEEE Benelux Chapter on EMC.
In the period 2012-2014, he was secretary of the Belgian National Committee for Radio-electricity
(URSI), where he is also in charge of commission E. In January 2013, Guy Vandenbosch was elevated
to the grade of fellow of the IEEE "for major contributions to the modelling of multilayer antennas and for structuring computational electromagnetics at European level and beyond". From September to
December 2014, he was a visiting professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Since 2017 he is a member of the IEEE Electromagnetics Committee.
