Noon Seminar Series: Four misconceptions about electron physics in plasmas
Guest Presenter: Prof. Pierre Gourdain, Professor of Physics, University of Rochester School of Arts and Sciences, ABSTRACT: For years, electron physics has been regarded as irrelevant in many plasma regimes. While scaling arguments are often used to show that electron effects are negligible, these arguments are there more to hide numerical code shortcomings rather than justify real physical situations. Going through the generalized Ohm’s law term by term, this talk will show how electron physics plays a role in astrophysical jet stability, in tokamak H-modes, in non-linear magnetic field diffusion and in laser-plasma interactions.
