Prospective grad students visit, learn about CSE

On March 13 – 15, thirty-seven prospective graduate students from around the country visited CSE to engage with faculty, current graduate students, and recent alumni to learn about the graduate program in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan.

The agenda for the visit in part included a plenary session of presentations by faculty and the graduate student organization president, followed by graduate student and recent alumni panel discussions. The visit also included a lively poster session, faculty research presentations, meetings with faculty, and introductions to the division’s labs in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Architecture,Interactive Systems, Software Systems, and Theory. Social events included a welcome party at Prof. Jacob Abernethy’s house and a group dinner.

The visitors took a walking tour of campus, engaged in social activities that included a party at a professor’s house and a group dinner, and attended a CSE Mini-Symposia with topics “AI: What Happens When We Succeed?” and “What does security and privacy research have in common with homemade wood-fired brick ovens? Come hungry.” The second session included a hands-on pizza-making at Prof. Kevin Fu’s house. Prof. Fu is known for his interest in artisanal bread making and related culinary explorations.

Response to the visit was exceedingly positive, and the CSE Division looks forward to welcoming an inspiring new crop of graduate students to our program this fall.
