Nowruz

Nowruz is part of the Persian New Year Festival. It is considered to be of Iranian origin, but it is celebrated in many countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The festival dates back to more than 3,500 years ago and is about spending time with family, friends, and neighbors.

ECE’s Nowruz celebration features food, music, and a Haft-Seen, which is a tabletop arrangement of seven symbolic items.

This ECE Haft-Seen includes:

  • garlic, for medicine and health
  • wheat sprouts, symbolizing rebirth
  • apples, symbolizing beauty
  • vinegar, symbolizing old age and patience
  • a goldfish in a bowl representing life and the end of the astral year
  • painted eggs (decoration)
