You can’t go wrong with your decision to major in either electrical or computer engineering, or any of the other majors offered at the University of Michigan.

Both majors are consistently ranked between the top 5 to 7 programs in the nation by U.S News & World Report, and students from both majors are highly recruited.

A major is electrical engineering gives a broad overview of specialties including information technology, circuits, wireless communications, robotics, power and energy, optics, nanotechnology, computer hardware, control, electromagnetics and more. It is a lab-intensive major especially in the upper classes, so if you like hands-on activities, you’ll enjoy this major.

A major in computer engineering focuses more deeply on computer hardware and software, and embedded systems. There are still plenty of hands-on projects, as most everything these days is controlled in some way with a computer.

A major in computer science will focus, in general, more on software, programming and everything to do with computing.

All majors require a basic programming course (basic does not mean easy).

Graduate work in areas such as computer security, computer networks, machine learning, and data science can be pursued with any of these three undergraduate degrees.

Each major culminates in a major design experience course (MDE), taken in your senior year. Some students take more than one MDE, and if approved, students can substitute one of these for a different MDE, even from a different major. The current offerings (as of Fall 2019) are as follows:

Excellent facilities. Gain experience working in our cutting-edge clean room facility or on our record-setting laser, HERCULES. Benefit from pervasive student computing centers, a 60 ft. anechoic chamber, and free access to engineering software.

Wide range of entrepreneurial resources.  ECE faculty and students are the most innovative single group on campus. They publish patents, start companies, and are always on the lookout for positively impacting society with their innovations. The Center for Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial student groups will help you realize your most ambitious dreams.

Access to the world.  There is tremendous support within the department, as well as at the College of Engineering and University of Michigan for study abroad. Many of our students participate in interdisciplinary student teams and travel to countries to install solar power, wind power, or in other ways help communities. Michigan offers over 100 study abroad programs on 6 continents. – so get out of the lab and explore how far your impact in engineering can go!
